The Flannel Edit: An Autumn Wardrobe Staple

Few cloths say Autumn quite like flannel. Soft to the touch, warm without weight and quietly textured, it is a cloth our Autumn 2026 collection returns to again and again.

Fabric remains the foundation. Cloths from Carnet, Delfino, Drago, Holland & Sherry, Loro Piana, Subalpino and Zegna bring depth, texture and movement to every garment. Wool, cashmere, silk, suede and brushed finishes add warmth, softness and character without compromising refinement.

For Him: Delfino Flannel

For him, a charcoal Delfino flannel suit in wool and cashmere, worn with a black silk and cashmere crew neck knit in place of a shirt and tie. Relaxed, refined and easy to wear from morning to evening.

Flannel is one of the hardest-working cloths in a man’s wardrobe. As a suit, it feels considered. Worn separately, the trousers sit just as naturally beneath a black Loro Piana cashmere car coat, as we styled them in the Journal, or with a knit at the weekend.

A Wardrobe Staple in Six Colours

Our Delfino flannel comes in six colours: dark green, taupe, black, charcoal, navy and brown. Each one is a foundation to build on. Choose a suit, a pair of trousers or a blazer, and every piece works with the rest.

The colour palette reflects the changing season. Navy, charcoal, camel, olive green and rich brown tones sit alongside softer neutrals, creating combinations that feel both sophisticated and versatile.

For Her: One Cloth, Two Ways

For her, a charcoal Holland & Sherry flannel windowpane check, cut two ways. As a tie coat, it is the outer layer for the season. As a blazer, worn with a white shirt and flannel tie, it is sharp and modern, paired here with a grey Carnet brushed cotton skirt.

Each piece is designed to complement the next. Worn together, they make a statement. Worn apart, they become part of a wardrobe that can be layered, combined and worn for whatever the day demands.

Why Flannel Works

Flannel is woven from wool, then milled and brushed to raise a soft, slightly napped surface. That finish gives the cloth its gentle handle, its warmth and its rich, matt colour. It is why flannel drapes so naturally and only looks better with wear.

It is a cloth with real character: soft enough for relaxed tailoring, structured enough for a sharp suit and warm enough to carry you from the first cool mornings of Autumn into Winter.

Ways to Wear Flannel

One cloth, many pieces. Each works on its own or as part of the whole.

The Suit

Charcoal or grey flannel, worn with a fine crew neck knit for a modern alternative to the shirt and tie.

The Trousers

Flannel trousers bring texture beneath a coat, with a knit or alongside a contrasting jacket.

The Blazer

A flannel blazer adds softness to denim, cotton or a co-ordinating skirt.

The Coat

A flannel coat layers easily over tailoring and knitwear, through to the colder months.
