Power Suit Dressing

Our Winter Journal took the idea back to New York, this time to the raw energy of Brooklyn: its brownstones, bridges and subway platforms. The styling borrows the quiet confidence of 1990s minimalism. Pinstripe suits paired with tonal flannel shirts and layered cashmere creates a classic winter look.

A pinstripe suit is one of the most confident things a person can wear. The fine, evenly spaced vertical stripe makes the figure look longer, sharpens the shoulder and draws the eye upwards, so the suit reads as assured without being loud.

Striped Fabric

Her suit is a Carnet navy and brown double-breasted pinstripe, worn with a white cotton button down shirt and navy tie.

His suit is a Drago green pinstripe double-breasted, worn with an open-collared shirt and no tie.

The stripes do the talking, so nothing else has to. It shows what the double-breasted does better than any other cut.

The Line

A vertical stripe lengthens the figure, sharpens the shoulder and draws the eye upward. Fine and closely spaced, it reads as quiet confidence rather than 1980s trading floor.

The Cut

The overlapping front, wider peak lapel and structured shoulder give a double-breasted jacket weight and presence that a single-breasted can’t match. Six buttons with two to fasten is the classic; four with two is the cleaner, more modern choice.

The Finish

A pinstripe shows everything, which is exactly why it needs to be custom made. The stripe should run unbroken across lapels, pockets and seams, and that only happens when the suit is cut for you.

Wearing the Power Suit

Choose the stripe first. A fine pencil stripe is the sharper, more discreet choice; a softer chalk stripe gives a relaxed, more expressive line. For winter, go heavier: a flannel or substantial worsted holds the drape of a double-breasted beautifully and keeps out the cold. Then keep everything around it simple. Wear a white or pale shirt and a dark tie, or a fine merino roll neck on the weekend, under a long overcoat.

Every piece in the Winter Journal is custom made, cut to your measurements in cloth from mills including Carnet, Delfino, Drago, Holland & Sherry, Subalpino and Zegna. Book an appointment and your tailor will help you choose a stripe, a cloth and a cut that’s entirely your own.
