Renowned across the globe, cashmere stands as one of the most opulent fibres in the realm of fashion. But have you ever paused to ponder the intricate path it takes from being sourced to being transformed into exquisite attire? Celebrated for its fine, organic essence, our cashmere is meticulously acquired through the combing of the Hircus goat’s coat. These robust and spirited creatures originated in the elevated terrains of Inner Mongolia and Northwest China. There, they have thrived in the harshest of climates, enduring temperatures that plummet to a staggering -40ºC. Their resilience to the extremities of their natural surroundings is attributed to the evolution of a unique undercoat, composed of numerous ultra-fine, velvety fibres, distinct from their longer, coarser outer fur.
From Goat to Garment
The Journey Continues
As spring ushers in warmer weather, a natural process unfolds. The goats commence the shedding of their tender undercoat, prompting herders to gather their flocks and delicately comb away these precious cashmere fibres. Once the combing phase concludes, the fibres are meticulously sorted by hand, categorized by colour and fineness. Following this, powerful machines undertake the task of expunging every trace of mud and residual matter from the fibres. Subsequent stages involve thorough cleansing, degreasing, and transitioning to the drying phase, a pivotal step known as ‘de-hairing.’ During de-hairing, the rougher goat hairs are discarded, allowing solely the most tender fibres to endure. These supple strands are then primed for dyeing and subsequent conversion into an array of yarns, from pure cashmere to blends like cashmere-silk, cotton-cashmere, and wool-cashmere.
The inherent structure of cashmere fibres boasts internal air pockets, culminating in a layer of snug and lightweight insulation. This natural property lends itself perfectly to crafting Autumn and Winter garments that offer warmth and breathability. In the current season, our velvety pure cashmere and cashmere-wool garments are available in the epitome of winter cosiness: the cable knit. Originally conceived to provide warmth for sailors and seafarers, this chunky knit assumes an air of pure luxury when fashioned as a turtleneck, crew neck, or half-zip style.
